The Sun News: Area quilters help with healing

Members of the Palmetto Crafty Quilters donated 44 quilt squares for a bereavement activity for Mercy Hospice’s Happy Hearts Camp. The squares serve as a palette for the children to express their feelings for the person they have lost. They are decorated with paints, feathers, metal stars, furs and ribbons.

“The quilting squares are one of the very favorite activities of the children, and they always let me know they keep them. They hang them in their bedroom or living [room] or some special place in their home,” Mercy Hospice Counseling Coordinator Mary Ann Ridley said.

“We get a great deal of satisfaction from helping children who are going through a mourning period, and it’s a nice way for the children to express themselves,” volunteer leader Kathy Richard said.

“They [the squares] are absolutely gorgeous; the ladies really outdid themselves. We’ve got wonderful, colorful borders in every color of the rainbow and different designs,” Ridley said. “We’re just going to let the children pick which one they would like to work on to decorate in memorial of the person that they lost.”

There is still space available in the March 25 Camp Happy Hearts; for information, contact Mary Ann Ridley at 234-6287. For information about the Palmetto Crafty Quilters, contact Richard at 236-5515.
