Hospice treats helpers to lunch

Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care honored volunteers at a luncheon April 17 in its offices near Conway Medical Center.

The Franciscan Sisters of Mary started Mercy Hospice, the first hospice in Horry County, in 1981.

That year, under the medical direction of Dr. Charles Sasser, who continues in that position today, Mercy Hospice served 30 patients.

The nonprofit agency, sponsored by Conway Medical Center, Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and Loris HealthCare System, provides end-of-life care and bereavement counseling for adults and children.

Free care is provided through donations for patients who have no insurance and do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Patients are treated in their homes of choice, whether that is the patient’s home, a nursing home, assisted-living facility or hospital.

Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care has been recognized nationally as a premier hospice.

It has provided care to more than 5,000 patients, and the bereavement counseling staff follows 400 families annually.
