Inside Scoop: Nurse Selected to go to London

Mar 05, 2007

The Mercy family is elated to announce that our own nurse, Cathy Hafner, has won a scholarship to attend the Hospice & Palliative Care Study Seminar in Britain! Cathy was 1 of 40 applicants world-wide selected to attend and 1 of 4 attendees from the United States !

Cathy’s has been with Mercy Hospice since 1999. Her credentials include Certified Hospice and Palliative Care nurse (CHPN) and Wound Care Certified (WCC). She has been a member of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association since 2001. Overall, Cathy has over 19 years of experience in the nursing industry.

The 2007 Hospice & Palliative Care Study Seminar being held in Britain, from March 18 ~ 30, is an intensive, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural seminar, exploring many facets of caring for the dying and the bereaved in a variety of settings. Their faculty are leading members of Britain’s hospice and palliative care community.

Over the past 26 years, members from across the world have been welcomed—57 countries in all! The diversity of members helps each member to acquire a broad overview of the differing opportunities and challenges confronting hospice and palliative caregivers worldwide and the solutions they have devised. Cathy’s experiences abroad will offer a perspective by which to review our own practices and perhaps even improve them.

This year’s seminar will provide practical “state of the art” information about providing exceptional hospice and palliative care. It examines the assumptions often made as care is given to people with a limited life span. The seminar includes small group work and will offer ample time for informal sharing and learning.

After a busy week of lectures and workshops in London, including study days at St. Christopher’s Hospice and Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice, members will divide into small groups for three full days of field experience at hospices and palliative care units throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

The Mercy family congratulates Cathy on this huge achievement and wishes her a safe journey!
