Mar 16, 2009MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – More than 35 area pharmacists attended Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care’s inaugural recent training event at Max & Erma’s.
Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care was formed in 1980 to bring a special program of caring to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Organized by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and initially funded by both the Sisters and the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, Mercy has since provided the highest quality care to patients and families dealing with advanced illness in Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties.
The interactive session, entitled, “Understanding Pain Management for Hospice Patients,” was led by Dr. Charles Sasser, Conway Internist and medical director for Mercy Hospice. Sponsored by Mercy Hospice, South Carolina School of Pharmacy and HospiScript, topics for this training included how different types of opioids are best used for different patient and treatment scenarios, the delicate balance of pain medication with other prescriptions and effective communication between pharmacists and doctors. Pharmacists in attendance were able to receive continuing education units (CEUs) for their participation.
